HELEN NEWMAN
Helen Newman has loved drawing, painting and craftwork since she won a National Art Competition at the age of four years, when a kindergarten pupil.
After leaving school, she studied at Bromley College of Art and was awarded the prestigious Royal Scholarship to the Royal College of Art.
After gaining an art teaching degree, she went on to work as a junior lecturer at several Art colleges. Work as a freelance painter, illustrator and designer led to designing and embroidering commissions for the Needlework Development Scheme, paintings and drawings being exhibited in various London galleries, with the London Group, the Artists International Association, etc., in the R.B.A. Galleries, the Whitechapel, the Royal Festival Hall, etc. Her work was featured in a book by Jack Beddington, "Young Artists of Promise"
As well as embroidery both hand and machine, she studied weaving and textiles, sculpture and lettercutting, and silversmithing.
She recently moved from Kent and now lives and works in Devon.
